This began the practice of companies providing coupons throughout most of the 1900s.

However, coupons truly became prominent in the society, during the Great Depression. That is when everyone needed to save money by any ethical means imaginable. Discounts such as those of promotional discounts caused people to give their scissors a workout by cutting out coupons. During this time, the use of coupons shifted from being mainly an advertising tool, to functioning as a way for customers to save on capital.

As the 1900s progressed, discount coupons ballooned into an entire industry. In 1957, the first clearing house that focused totally on the recovery of coupons began operating. Its name was the Nielsen Coupon Clearing House, but later it became the Manufacturers Coupon Control Center. At this juncture, coupons had become a critical aspect of the business world.

Introduction to a New Line of Coupons

During the past decade or so, technology drastically revolutionized the coupon industry. The advent of the Information Age changed the way that people received information, and how companies advertised their goods and services. Basically, as methods of marketing changed, the form of discount coupons changed as well.     

The two main types of free coupons that have emerged in the Information Age are printable coupons and coupon codes. Printable coupons are available online, but you redeem them in local offline stores. Meanwhile, coupon codes are discount coupons that consist of a string of numbers. You enter this code into a part of the form you use when making online orders. Afterwards, the coupon's discount is deducted from the total amount of your payables prior to making your payment through the Internet.

These online codes continue to grow in their popularity and security. While they represent the gradual evolution of coupons, their essence has never changed. The bottom line is that coupons allow you to buy more of what you want - for less money.
